The right descent stalled at z = 0.998 m, compared with 0.999 m previously, while X, Y, and orientation changed. This indicates contact preventing the descent. Initially I wondered whether the gripper was touching the red car or one of the baskets. In the right wrist view, the left finger is near (125, 260) pixels and the red car’s front wing spans approximately x = 123–208 and y = 275–311 pixels. Their overlap convinces me that the finger is catching the red wing. I should stop descending and lift away before changing the grasp.
At +45° yaw, the closing line is approximately (-0.707, -0.707) in the horizontal world plane, with the open fingers extending toward both (-X, -Y) and (+X, +Y). I estimate the red car at (0.21, -0.112) m and the green car at (0.25, -0.064) m, giving a red-car offset of (-0.04, -0.048) m relative to the green car. That lies almost exactly along the negative closing direction. The cars are beside one another along their narrow axes, so an open gripper descending across the green car’s width puts a finger on the red car.
I could lift and move right to attempt an offset grasp. I also considered exploiting the current contact by closing around the red wing and perhaps the green car, but that could catch both objects unpredictably. I still prefer to pick the green car first. Rotating the closing direction along its length would put the open fingers in front of and behind the car, clear of the red car. However, gripping the entire length may not fit: I have estimated its length at about 0.1 m, or perhaps 0.09 m against a maximum opening of about 0.09 m. A bumper-to-bumper grasp might just fit, but it is probably too long. A grasp on only a front or rear section is another possibility. Could I pinch the rear spoiler along the car’s length, even though the spoiler’s width runs across the narrow axis?
I considered separating the cars by pushing before regrasping. A gentle +X or +Y push of about 0.03 m might move the green car away from the red car, although their contact geometry is uncertain and sliding could be unpredictable. The basket behind the green car may begin near y = +0.02 m, so pushing toward +Y could hit it. I tentatively estimate the red basket’s footprint as x = 0.2–0.44 m and y = 0–0.12 m. Moving the green car from (0.25, -0.064) m by +0.04 m in X to x = 0.29 m would keep it in front of the basket and farther from the red car; the right arm’s base is around x = 0.3 m, so that area should be accessible.
I briefly considered placing a closed gripper 0.04 m to the right of the green car’s center, with the fingers down near z = 0.85 m, then moving it toward +X. But a pusher must be left of the object to push it right, and the red car occupies that side. From the right, that motion would require pulling instead. Pushing from the front toward +Y risks the basket, while pushing from behind toward -Y would require working in the tight space near the basket rim. Pushing the red car left would similarly require getting between the cars. These options are awkward. Closing at the current pose to lift the red wing first is also uncertain: the left finger contacts the red wing, while the right finger is near the green car and basket, so closure could push one car and grip the other.
A grasp on a wing or spoiler looks more promising. Picking the red car across its narrow body would again put an open finger on the green car. Gripping its whole length would avoid that, but the Formula car is about 0.11 m long, compared with an estimated 0.08 m gap. Instead, I could pinch its rear wing from front and back along the car’s long axis. The wing is wide across the narrow axis but only about 0.01 m thick along the length. One finger in front of the wing and one behind it could provide a small but secure contact without entering the neighboring car’s space. I am not entirely sure which end is the rear in the high view; the red car has wings at both ends, and the large flat wing currently appears near v = 270 pixels in the wrist view.
The same approach could work on the green sports car’s rear spoiler. Its black spoiler is at the top of the wrist image and spans the car’s width. Pinching its thickness along the car’s length would put the open fingers ahead of and behind the spoiler, rather than toward the red car. I should center the grasp on the spoiler midpoint, not the car’s body center. This offers a more distinct handle and may avoid the slipping seen with the body grasps.
With the current +45° yaw, the car’s long axis appears vertical in the wrist image and the fingers close horizontally across its width. To close along its length, I need another 90° of yaw, choosing either +135° or -45°. The -45° downward quaternion is approximately [0.6533, -0.2706, 0.6533, 0.2706] in wxyz order. The +135° alternative is [-0.2706, -0.6533, -0.2706, 0.6533], equivalently [0.2706, 0.6533, 0.2706, -0.6533]. Either change from +45° is about 1.57 rad, exceeding the 1.0 rad limit for one action, so I need an intermediate orientation.
I could go through zero yaw and then -45°, or through +90° and then +135°. I briefly considered [0, -0.707, 0, 0.707] as the zero-yaw quaternion, then recognized that zero yaw here means the original downward quaternion [0.5, -0.5, 0.5, 0.5]. I prefer the route through that downward pose to -45°. At -45°, local Y maps to approximately (-0.707, +0.707), which lies along the same line as the estimated car long axis (+X, -Y). The nominal +45° to zero-yaw change and zero-yaw to -45° change are each about 0.785 rad. I should lift the right gripper toward z = 1.05 m to clear the contact before completing this reorientation. The left arm can continue carrying the watch while the right arm changes approach.
I need an estimated spoiler location. In observation 282, the green spoiler may be centered near (262, 116) pixels, with the black wing spanning approximately x = 215–325 and y = 80–140 pixels. The right end effector is at [0.253, -0.069, 0.998] m, and its orientation has deviated to roughly 40° yaw. Another visual estimate puts the body center near (290, 200) pixels and the spoiler near (270, 115). In the earlier aligned observation 276, I estimated the spoiler near (286, 83) and the body center near (316, 153), a vertical image difference of -70 pixels.
At end-effector z = 1.03 m with the full +45° yaw, I tentatively place the spoiler about +0.03 m in world Y from the body and around z = 0.79 m. I could invert its projection either now or after lifting. The current high-camera spoiler estimate near (432, 213) pixels might correspond to x = 0.25 m, y = -0.04 m, z = 0.79 m, but that remains approximate.
Using the body-center estimate (0.25, -0.064) m and the long-axis direction (+X, -Y) from rear to front, a rear offset of (-0.02, +0.02) m gives a spoiler center of (0.23, -0.044) m. The corresponding front estimate is (0.27, -0.084) m. I questioned whether the red car’s relative offset (-0.04, -0.048) m was truly along the narrow axis, but for a long axis of (+X, -Y), the narrow line is (+X, +Y) or (-X, -Y), so that offset is consistent with the red car being to the green car’s front-left side. The spoiler at (0.23, -0.044) m is farther from it.
For a spoiler grasp closing along the long axis, I estimate the open fingers about ±0.04 m along that line around the spoiler. Possible finger positions are (0.198, -0.016) m at the back-left and (0.282, -0.072) m at the front-right over the hood. The back-left finger may be near the red basket’s front, which I should monitor. Relative to the red car at (0.21, -0.112) m, that finger has about 0.096 m of Y separation, which looks safe.
I also need a suitable contact height. I initially considered fingers near z = 0.90 m, but the spoiler is around z = 0.80 m and the table around 0.75 m. An end-effector height near 0.928 m would put the fingertips around 0.77 m, allowing the pads to contact the wing near 0.80 m. I should avoid going so low that the fingers hit the body or table. A spoiler grasp around end-effector z = 0.93 m, perhaps 0.93–0.94 m, seems better than the 0.915 m target used for the lower body grasp. I estimate the vertical pad span as z = 0.77–0.83 m, with spoiler contact around 0.79 m. This should provide a more reliable pinch, and I could later use a similar rear-wing grasp for the red car.
For the immediate recovery, I considered lifting the right arm to z = 1.06 m. I will instead target [0.23, -0.044, 1.05] m above the estimated spoiler while returning to the zero-yaw downward quaternion [0.5, -0.5, 0.5, 0.5], with the gripper open. From its current [0.253, -0.069, 0.998] m pose, I estimate the target distance at about 0.063 m and the orientation change at about 0.7 rad. Lifting should relieve the contact. I will use six control steps for both arms, keeping the left gripper closed as it continues toward [-0.3, -0.06, 1.04] m with the tilted quaternion beginning [0.653, …]. The right motion is upward away from the contact, so this longer recovery action appears safe.
