Both watches now appear held. During the right test lift, its opening command dropped from 0.794 to 0.325, and the watch moved into the pads and remained centered. The left watch is held across its face and band.
I will place the left watch in the white basket, stage the right watch at the front-center of the table, and then have the left arm pick up that second watch and place it in white. I briefly considered direct placement with the right arm, but I do not think it can reach the white basket. I can reuse the staging spot at X = 0.06 m, Y = −0.36 m after the left arm leaves it. The transfers could run in parallel, but I need to avoid converging paths near that spot. One initial possibility is a right waypoint at [0.20, −0.28, 1.03] m and a left waypoint at [−0.10, −0.20, 1.05] m, though I still need to choose the left placement orientation.
The left wrist currently has 90 degrees of yaw with its fingers pointing downward. I have not yet placed anything in white; the blue-basket placements used the forward-and-downward orientation with zero yaw, approximately [0.653, −0.270, 0.270, 0.653] in wxyz order. I eventually want that orientation to place the watch near X = −0.3 m, Y = 0.06 m. From the current yawed quaternion [0, 0.707, 0, −0.707], the dot product with that placement quaternion is approximately −0.653. The resulting orientation distance is 2 acos(0.653) = 1.713 rad, exceeding the 1 rad limit, so I need an intermediate orientation.
Could I instead retain the 90-degree yaw and tilt the fingers forward while keeping the closing direction along environment Y? The current rotation maps local X to −Z and local Y to −Y. I initially considered a desired local X direction of [0, 0.707, −0.707] and local Y direction of [0, −1, 0]. My first cross-product calculation suggested local Z would point along +X, leading to the tentative matrix [[0, 0, 1], [0.707, −1, 0], [−0.707, 0, 0]]. I wondered whether a rotation about environment Y could produce this.
The current yawed rotation matrix is approximately [[0, 0, −1], [0, −1, 0], [−1, 0, 0]]. Applying a −45-degree rotation about environment Y to local X = [0, 0, −1] gives [0.707, 0, −0.707], while local Y remains −Y. It transforms local Z = [−1, 0, 0] to [−0.707, 0, −0.707], which does not match my proposed +X direction. Rechecking the current columns, [0, 0, −1] × [0, −1, 0] = [−1, 0, 0], so the current matrix is consistent. My proposed cross product had a sign error: [0, 0.707, −0.707] × [0, −1, 0] is [−0.707, 0, 0], rather than +X. More fundamentally, the proposed local X and Y directions have a dot product of −0.707 and are not perpendicular. I cannot keep local Y along −Y while giving local X a +Y component of 0.707. With the closing direction along Y, the fingers can tilt in the XZ plane, not toward +Y. Returning to zero yaw will allow the forward tilt in the YZ plane that I used for the earlier basket placements.
I could use a slerp intermediate between the current orientation and the zero-yaw placement orientation, calculated with SciPy or manually. However, moving toward white at a high link6 position with the fingers downward may encounter reach limits. A more familiar sequence is to return to the zero-yaw downward orientation first, then tilt forward while moving. The downward quaternion [0.5, −0.5, 0.5, 0.5] has a dot product of approximately −0.707 with the current yawed quaternion, corresponding to a 90-degree change. The forward-and-downward placement quaternion has a dot product of approximately −0.653, corresponding to about 98.3 degrees. I will split the return through the previously used 45-degree yaw quaternion [−0.270, 0.653, −0.270, −0.653], which is 45 degrees from both the current orientation and the zero-yaw downward orientation. After reaching zero yaw, the forward tilt is another 45 degrees. There are 504 control steps remaining, enough for this sequence.
The right arm does not need a basket-placement orientation for staging. It can retain its current 90-degree yaw, carry the watch to X = 0.06 m, Y = −0.36 m, lower link6 to Z = 0.92 m, and release. Keeping the held orientation unchanged should leave the watch naturally flat. The left arm can later use the same yawed grasp orientation to pick it up.
First, I will lift both watches vertically: the left link6 is currently at Z = 0.988 m and will target 1.08 m, while the right will target 1.03 m. I will keep both grippers closed and their orientations unchanged for eight control steps.
After that lift, I could rotate the left wrist to the 45-degree yaw orientation while moving toward [−0.08, −0.20, 1.08] m. Its fingers would still point downward, so this would not swing the watch forward. Meanwhile, the right arm could carry its watch toward [0.18, −0.32, 1.02] m with the current yawed orientation. The left path moves toward negative X and positive Y, while the right path moves toward negative X and negative Y, so they should diverge. I can then rotate the left wrist to the zero-yaw downward orientation while moving toward [−0.20, −0.10, 1.06] m, followed by the forward-and-downward orientation while approaching [−0.28, −0.05, 1.03] m above white.
The white-basket center is approximately X = −0.30 m, Y = 0.06 m. I estimate the held left watch’s contact offset at local X = 0.15 m. In the forward-and-downward orientation, that gives offsets of about +0.106 m along Y and −0.106 m along Z. A final link6 target of [−0.30, −0.045, 0.98] m would therefore put the watch near [−0.30, 0.061, 0.874] m. I expect the left arm to reach its own-side basket and keep the small, flat watch clear of the white rim and neighboring baskets. I will release at link6 Z = 0.98 m, withdraw, and return for the staged watch.
After staging its watch, the right arm could retreat toward home or standby while the left finishes. I considered returning it near its initial pose, approximately [0.3, −0.352, 0.922] m with quaternion [0.707, 0, 0, 0.707], to reduce the eventual reset motion. But robot_reset returns both arms and should only be called once the manipulation goal is complete, so I cannot use it to reset the right arm early. I could move the right arm near home with robot_act instead. From its yawed staging pose at X = 0.06 m, Y = −0.36 m, Z = 0.92 m, the orientation change to the initial quaternion has a dot product of −0.5 and is 120 degrees, rather than the 90 degrees I first considered, so that would also need an intermediate orientation. There is no need to do this early. I can leave the right arm safely clear and reset both arms after all objects are placed and the left arm has withdrawn; 50 reset steps may be enough, and the remaining budget seems sufficient.
For the immediate action, I will perform the eight-step vertical lift with both watches held.
