The new triangulation places the watch dial at z = 0.789 m rather than the earlier estimate of 0.781 m, probably because I chose different corresponding pixels. Perhaps the table is actually at z = 0.78 m and the dial top is at 0.789 m. The green pepper’s stem tip is estimated at z = 0.805 m. That seems low if the table is at 0.77 m, since it would be only 0.035 m above the table, but it may be plausible. The pepper body center may be at z = 0.785 m, so my grasp-height target of 0.795 m still seems reasonable.
The green pepper center may be around x = -0.292 m, y = -0.16 m, while the watch dial is around x = -0.324 m, y = -0.136 m. Their y separation is only 0.024 m, and the watch is 0.032 m to the left. They appear more nearly side by side than I previously thought, which increases the risk of the left finger contacting the watch during a pepper grasp. The wrist view shows the watch on the left and the pepper on the right. Should I shift the gripper toward the pepper center and change its closing direction? An open left finger around x = -0.35 m could be directly over the watch and contact it during descent. The high view is difficult to interpret: the white gripper body appears around horizontal pixels 100–150, the pepper around 172, and the right finger around 190, but I cannot confidently locate the other finger.
In the observation 55 left wrist view, the watch spans approximately u = 120–265 and the pepper u = 225–480. The left finger is around horizontal pixels 0–125, and the right finger is around 520. Is the open left finger actually left of the watch rather than between the watch and pepper? If so, closing it toward the pepper could push the watch first if both objects occupy the same y region. The contact portion of the finger might be in front of the watch, however, so I need to consider their world positions.
The measured left quaternion is approximately [0.70465, -0.05094, 0.05899, 0.70526]. My initial rough guess for the world direction of local X was [0.0039, 0.997, 0.117], but I should check the rotation matrix. Using w = 0.7047, x = -0.0509, y = 0.0590, and z = 0.7053, my calculation gives the local-X column as approximately [-0.0018, 0.9876, 0.0114]. I obtain this from 1 - 2(y² + z²), 2(xy + wz), and 2(xz - wy), using terms such as 0.00348, 0.4974, -0.003, 0.4968, -0.0359, and +0.0416. Thus the fingers remain almost horizontal along world +Y. My calculated local-Y direction is approximately [-0.993, -0.0026, 0.0115], with its final component coming from 0.0833 - 0.0718, so closure is approximately along world -X. The local-Z direction is approximately [-0.0658, 0.1552, 0.988]. This suggests a small tilt.
Using the finger extent of 0.1576 m and the calculated world-Y component of 0.9876, the fingertip y coordinate is approximately -0.1282 m. That extends beyond the pepper center at y = -0.16 m into the watch’s region around y = -0.136 m. I am unsure of the sign when estimating a finger’s x coordinate from the end-effector position and half the opening, but a left finger at x = -0.34 m would be over the watch. At the current end-effector height of 0.851 m, the finger bottom might be around 0.83 m, above the watch at about 0.79 m. Descending to 0.795 m could bring the fingertip into the watch.
A near-tip pepper grasp might keep the fingertips in front of the watch. The watch band radius may be about 0.03 m along y, giving a front edge around y = -0.166 m from the dial center at -0.136 m. Alternatively, its band center may be around -0.12 m and its front edge around -0.16 m. This overlaps the pepper center’s y coordinate. Are the objects touching? Their image spans overlap, but that could be perspective; their physical gap may be about 0.01 m.
One option is to grasp the pepper across world Y, with the fingers separated front to back and approaching horizontally from the side. At yaw 0 degrees, local X points along world +X and local Y along world Y. An approach from the left would put the end effector at x = pepper x - 0.13 m and y = pepper y, but the watch at x = -0.324 m lies in that approach path. Approaching from the right at yaw 180 degrees would make the fingers extend along world -X, with the end effector at x = pepper x + 0.13 m and y = pepper y. That would approach from the clearer side while closing along Y. Moving from the current yaw of +90 degrees to 180 degrees requires a +90-degree rotation, split across two actions because of the 1 rad orientation limit. I could rotate at a safe height and then move to the right of the pepper. This is more involved, but could avoid the watch.
Another option is to lift and pick the watch first, then the pepper. A centered, near-tip watch grasp with the current orientation could put the open right finger over the pepper, creating the same problem. I could instead rotate to yaw 0 degrees and approach the watch from the left, closing along Y and avoiding the pepper to its right. That would still require handling the two objects with changed orientations.
A downward-pointing gripper could eliminate the long horizontal finger intrusion. Starting with local X along world +Y, a +90-degree rotation about world X would point the fingers along +Z, while -90 degrees would point them along -Z. The quaternion composition rotX(-90) * rotZ(90) would point the fingers downward while leaving closure along world X, since the initial local-Y direction is world -X. With downward fingers, the fingertip height would be end-effector z - 0.1576 m, so an end-effector height around 0.94 m could reach a table at 0.78 m. Perhaps the initial height of 0.9215 m makes sense for that kind of approach. However, closing across X would still place an open finger at approximately x = -0.34 m, potentially over the neighboring watch; with an opening of about ±0.05 m, vertical descent would not solve that lateral conflict.
A top-down grasp closing along world Y seems better. The fingers would be separated front to back around the pepper, while the watch at x = -0.324 m would be outside their path. The desired rotation-matrix columns would be local X = (0, 0, -1), local Y = (0, 1, 0), and local Z = (1, 0, 0), giving R = [[0, 0, 1], [0, 1, 0], [-1, 0, 0]]. I initially wondered whether this was a -90-degree rotation about world Y, but the standard matrix R_y(theta) = [[cos(theta), 0, sin(theta)], [0, 1, 0], [-sin(theta), 0, cos(theta)]] shows that -90 degrees maps local X to +Z. The required rotation is +90 degrees about Y, mapping local X to -Z and local Z to +X. Its quaternion is [cos(45 degrees), 0, sin(45 degrees), 0], approximately [0.707, 0, 0.707, 0]. From the nominal Z-axis 90-degree orientation, the quaternion dot product is 0.5, giving an orientation distance of 2*acos(0.5) = 2.094 rad, or 120 degrees. That would need three separate actions under the orientation bound. I could perform them at a safe height, subject to the kinematic precheck. A downward grasp may be natural for this task, although the robot’s position and orientation limits still need checking.
Top-down grasps might simplify the other picks too. A horizontal grasp puts the end effector around the object’s height, whereas a top-down grasp could put it about 0.12 m above the object, potentially improving arm clearance and reach. The slow descent so far may be related to horizontal orientation and reach constraints. Transporting an object held near downward fingertips would require enough height to clear basket rims. I could consider switching all picks to top-down, rotating around z = 1.0 m where there is clearance. There are 1045 control steps remaining.
For the closely spaced pepper and watch, top-down closure along world Y appears safest. For isolated objects, the closing direction can follow their shape. The cars are long along Y, so a top-down grasp closing across world X would be appropriate. The current horizontal approach may still work for the isolated yellow car. I can therefore change only the left arm to a top-down grasp while the right continues its descent; their different orientations should not interfere. The left rotation must be staged because it exceeds 1 rad.
I also considered retaining the left horizontal orientation and moving farther back along y. To put the fingertip around y = -0.17 m, in front of the estimated watch edge, the end effector would be at y = -0.3276 m. That places the tip about 1 cm in front of the pepper center at -0.16 m. I initially wondered whether pads near the tip could cover y = -0.17 to -0.15 m, but with an end effector at -0.328 m and pad positions along local X from about 0.11 to 0.157 m, their world-y span would instead be approximately -0.218 to -0.170 m; the farthest extent at 0.1576 m gives -0.1704 m. They would lie in front of the pepper center, perhaps contacting its front surface around -0.19 m. A grasp around y = -0.18 m might hold the front half, but with a body radius of about 0.03 m and the center of mass behind the pads, tipping could be a concern.
At end-effector y = -0.31 m, the fingertip would be around -0.152 m and the pads would span -0.202 to -0.152 m, extending 0.008 m beyond the pepper center. That could still contact the watch’s front edge near -0.16 m. The current target of -0.305 m gives a tip around -0.147 m and intrudes farther. Setting y = -0.32 m would give a tip around -0.162 m; contact at local x = 0.13 m would be around y = -0.19 m, on the pepper’s front half. This might avoid most of the watch, although a left finger at x = -0.34 m could still touch its boundary near y = -0.16 m. Friction might support that grasp, but the clearance and stability are uncertain.
A lateral offset is another possibility. Moving the left gripper +0.015 m along x would put an estimated left finger at -0.325 m rather than -0.34 m. The watch’s right edge may be around -0.295 m. With a watch center of -0.324 m and radius 0.03 m, its x span is approximately -0.354 to -0.294 m; the pepper centered at -0.292 m with the same estimated radius spans -0.322 to -0.262 m. Their x spans overlap even if the objects lie diagonally beside one another. With an open half-gap around 0.04 m, the left finger would be at -0.332 m, within the watch’s span. Shifting +0.02 m would put it at -0.312 m, still within that span, while the right finger would be far out at -0.232 m and the pepper would no longer be centered. That could produce an off-center pinch. The maximum gap may be about 0.08 m, or ±0.04 m, and the boolean gripper command does not let me request a partial opening. Preclosing against the watch is not a useful option.
I will use the top-down, Y-closing approach for the green pepper. Rotating the left gripper now at z = 0.851 m could sweep its fingers into the pepper or watch, so I should first lift it to z = 1.02 m, then rotate in clear space. Meanwhile, the right arm can continue approaching the yellow car.
The right end effector is currently approximately (0.1896, -0.343, 0.8843) m, compared with the earlier grasp target of (0.208, -0.358, 0.785) m. The high view may show the car between the fingers around pixel (430, 280), partly behind the left finger. Its orientation is nearly nominal. I considered another 15-step descent toward z = 0.80 m, but the x offset of about 0.018 m needs attention: with an open gap of approximately ±0.04 m and a car width around 0.045 m, an end-effector x of 0.19 m puts the fingers around 0.15 and 0.23 m. The estimated car span is 0.185–0.23 m, so the right finger may be on its edge. I should center toward x = 0.208 m while still above it. I also considered ten steps toward z = 0.82 m, but will use a right target of (0.208, -0.358, 0.81) m for 15 steps.
For the left arm, I will target (-0.291, -0.30, 1.02) m with the nominal horizontal quaternion and the gripper open. The planned upward change is about 0.169 m, within the target-distance bound. Based on the observed motion rate, it may rise only about 0.08 m during 15 steps, but the purpose is to lift away from the objects before changing orientation. Both grippers will remain open while the left lifts and the right centers and descends.
