The tool rejected the left target for exceeding the 1.0 rad orientation limit, but I do not understand why. My estimated dot product between the current and final quaternions is about 0.866, which I have interpreted as an angle of about 0.524 rad. Using the more precise components, I get 0.2887 − 0.0002 + 0.2886 + 0.2888 = 0.8658 and an estimated angle of 0.523 rad. I could check this with SciPy. The target wxyz quaternion [0.5, 0.5, 0.5, 0.5] has norm 1, and the rounded observed quaternion [0.577, 0, 0.577, 0.578] also appears normalized.
Could the tool compute distance directly from quaternion components, use a rotation trace differently, or interpret the component order differently? The interface specifies wxyz, which is the order I am using. The error appears to be a validation rejection before IK, so a joint constraint or the final IK interpolation does not seem to explain it. I also considered whether normalization, a sign convention, swapped w and z components, or a difference between the internal pose and the reported pose could explain the result, but none of these explanations seems convincing. The cause remains unresolved.
One possible smaller target is [0.55, 0.25, 0.55, 0.55], but my normalization check gives 0.3025 + 0.0625 + 0.3025 + 0.3025 = 0.970, so I should normalize it. I could instead use a quarter-step spherical interpolation. For an intermediate rotation estimated at 0.26 rad, adding the current and final quaternions gives [1.077, 0.5, 1.077, 1.077]. Using a norm of 1.868 gives approximately [0.5767, 0.2676, 0.5767, 0.5767]. My estimated dot product with the current quaternion is 0.333 − 0.0001 + 0.333 + 0.333, approximately 1.0. With the final quaternion, I get 0.288 + 0.134 + 0.288 + 0.288 = 0.998, which I estimate as an angle of 0.05 rad. By those estimates, this alternative is almost the final orientation, which is also puzzling.
Perhaps the tool uses SciPy’s xyzw order internally. I initially interpreted [0.707, 0, 0, 0.707] in that order as a 90-degree rotation about Y, and [0.5, 0.5, 0.5, 0.5] as a 120-degree rotation about the XYZ diagonal. I estimated their separation at 1.717 rad. I also estimated that [0.577, 0, 0.577, 0.577] would be about 1.915 rad from the initial orientation under that interpretation, yet intermediate commands were accepted. This does not resolve the discrepancy.
The earlier feedback offers some comparisons. At observation 132, the left quaternion [0.571, −0.306, 0.512, 0.565] had an estimated dot product of 0.329 + 0 + 0.295 + 0.326 = 0.950 with the intermediate target [0.577, 0, 0.577, 0.577]. I estimated that rotation at 0.635 rad, and the command was accepted. At observation 142, the quaternion [0.579, −0.060, 0.570, 0.580] had an estimated dot product of 0.289 − 0.03 + 0.285 + 0.29 = 0.834 with the final target, giving 1.17 rad; that rejection made sense. At observation 148, the dot product is about 0.866, which I expected to pass. Rounding does not seem sufficient to explain the rejection.
Rechecking the component-order hypothesis, the initial orientation written in xyzw order is [0, 0, 0.707, 0.707], and the earlier intermediate orientation is [−0.2706, 0.2706, 0.6533, 0.6533]. Their dot product is 0.462 + 0.462 = 0.924, giving my estimated angle of 0.78 rad, consistent with acceptance. The current quaternion in xyzw order is approximately [0, 0.577, 0.578, 0.577]. Its dot product with [0.5, 0.5, 0.5, 0.5] is 0.2885 + 0.289 + 0.2885 = 0.866, again giving my estimate of 0.523 rad. Changing the order therefore does not explain this case.
I also considered slightly perturbing the final target to [0.51, 0.49, 0.51, 0.49]. Its squared components sum to 0.2601 × 2 + 0.2401 × 2 = 1.0004, giving the normalized quaternion [0.509898, 0.490102, 0.509898, 0.490102]. I estimate its dot product with the current quaternion at 0.8655 and its angle at 0.524 rad. There is no clear reason why avoiding components exactly equal to 0.5 would help.
I will instead take a smaller intermediate turn using [0.56, 0.15, 0.56, 0.56]. My normalization check gives 0.3136 + 0.0225 + 0.3136 × 2 = 0.9633, yielding approximately [0.57054, 0.15291, 0.57054, 0.57054]. I estimate its dot product with the current quaternion as 0.329 + 0 + 0.329 + 0.329 = 0.987 and the rotation as 0.322 rad, about 37% of the remaining turn. I will use [0.570536, 0.152907, 0.570536, 0.570536] for both arms, treating it as a normalized linear interpolation with parameter 0.3, while continuing their approach translations. After this intermediate turn, I can attempt the final orientation again.
